Teachers from the Trenches: My students are learning about Social Bookmarking tools like del.icio.us, what tool do you use, why and can you share the link to your social bookmarking site?
I use both del.cio.us and Diigo. My favorite aspect of this is that if my computer dies (or is dropped, as has happened pre-social bookmarking), I haven't lost everything! Also, I can do some good sites research on a topic, then just send one link to my kids for access to the topic. They also go into my bookmarks on their own to find good stuff on other subjects too! That's a nice feeling.
As for usability, I like the simplicity of Delicious, but the community aspect of Diigo is terrific! I belong to a few groups and every morning there are really cool bookmarked sites waiting for me in my email inbox. I can choose to add them to my stable, but don't have to if I don't want. And I can rely on my community to find the best bookmarks for me! yay!
However, I sometimes find it hard to find my own bookmarks on Diigo, so I just have the Delicious and Diigo linked, so when I save to Diigo (definitely easy in Firefox) it goes right to my Delicious!
I don't use the networking features of Delicious too much--only with teachers I know who teach in a similar style and subject.
I prefer del.icio.us although our webcast uses diigo
I'm taking an online course right now where I cannot save bookmarks to delicious from within the course, so I could use Diigo or GoogleNotebook. The Notebook is not social bookmarking, but at least when I find a site I want to use next year I can save it to put in the lesson plans later.
I have really started to like delicious and I am using it alot. I knew it would not take long to get the required 100 links. I have this on my home computer, Cyndi, will I have to do something complex to have it on my work computer in the fall? I get a new laptop then and I want to easily move all I do here to there. Thanks.
I'm not Cyndi, but in order to access your bookmarks from any computer, no matter where you are or what platform you're using (PC, Mac, Linux, etc), you'll not have to do anything fancy other than log in to your page in Del.icio.us.
Now to continue adding to your bookmarks on your new computer, you'll want to download the application that adds the buttons to your tool bar, but to simply access the bookmarks, you're good to go!
I work in the same way as Ginger. I have been using del.icio.us for quite a while now, but I have a pretty large network. I can click on the Your Network link and have a steady stream of interesting ideas. I have been using Diigo for a shorter time, but also like it for the groups that I can join for specific intentions such as Peer Coaching. I like the fact that Diigo lets me bookmark to both sites at once. I also find it easier to show someone my set of tags in del.icious - by typing: http://del.icio.us/njtechteacher/digitalcitizenship.
